The Northern Pacific Museum at Toppenish could be of interest.

Old NP Depot is still standing, and in good shape with upscale restraunt in it. Dining or snacking Inside or out. Some photos, etc decorate the inside. BNSF Mainline still runs by directly outside.
Track in Tree lined streets and accross neighborhoods still service some sawmills. You can see the "Sea-Hawk" moving freight.
"Historic District" accross the tracks from the NP Depot has a lot of old cars - both freight and passenger for "lookin' at" - Heavyweights, betterments, streamliners, freights, caboose, etc. Tequila's is a Mexican restraunt with EXCELLENT food. It is located in a group of the cars. (Not a bar-despite the name). One car is an old UP Solarium - Observation (I think)
If you are around on Monday look up the club "White Pass & Yakima". They are on "D" street, just west accross the RR Tracks - in the fruit district. Check exacty address w/ Clover Leaf Hobbies. They have a BIG layout in a warehouse, and with the exception of 2 turnouts, ALL their turnouts are HANDLAID. This includes DOUBLE SLIP SWITCHES. Sectional layout, well finished, and runs wonderfully.
There are several fascenating bridges around town too. NP's old main line goes up the Yakima River Canyon, you know.
I work out of an office that overlooks this area.

Depending on how you define "neck of the woods", there are two good shops in the Tri-Cities area (Richland, Kennewick, Pasco) about 70-odd miles to the east. Parkade Hobbies (www.parkadehobbies.com) in Kennewick is a good full-service shop. PF&S Railway Supply (www.angelfire.com/biz/pfsrailway) is located about 10 miles north of Pasco, but has a large selection and is well worth the trip.
As for the YVT, I'm pretty sure it is completely defunct. However, there appears to be a trolley museum in Yakima (www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/index.html) that might be worth a look.

South of Yakima take the Union Gap exit to the west. Go into town and take a left at the light and go about a mile and on the right should be a shop called the Clover Leaf or something like that its been a couple years but it was a really good full line shop. Large train section, planes plastic and even crafts for other members of the family. I don't know anything about the YVT, But, at Toppenish, which you should go and see the murals there,is a small railroad museum with a 10 wheeler being rebuilt. Toppenish is a few miles further south on the freeway and is about 8 miles off the freewy to the west. Its a good little tourist trap.
