Running boards

What does the top of steam loco running boards look like in the U.S. (smooth, diamond, small studs) and is there are difference between mainline and small time locos. How is the best way to replicate the above in HO. I am currently building/detailing an 0-6-0 and SP 2-8-0 made by MDC.
Thanks,
Darren

I recall both steel with embossed diamond tread and wood bracketed by angle irons. The edges were slightly raised to prevent a foot from slipping off.

I don't know much about the running boards, but to model them you can get diamond riveted styrene, i think it is through walthers, item number 119-2005-this is from alloy forms. Plastruct also makes it but it is more expensive, the number is 570-91687 I would check out the walthers website, or their catologue too.
