A few years ago, Mainline Modeler magazine featured a home-made system call the Cooler Crawler that was rather inexpensive to build, and we are using it on the Cochise & Western Model Ralroad Club 20x40 foot layout in Sierra Vista, Arizona, with 8 hand-held controllers. The system was designed by a group of hobbyists and was on a Web site under the name of TrackTronics. Use the Google search engine to find TrackTronics or Cooler Crawler, and go from there -- if you have any experience in electornics do-it-yourself construction projects this is a good way to go.
