Retrofitting an old "Big Boy" with a new motor.

Does anyone know what motors are a good match for replacing the old ones in a Rivorossi Big Boy, manufactured over 25 years ago?

Check with www.nwsl.com you can email them with your question. While you are at it I'd suggest replacing the gear train as well. If the motor is shot the drive train is likely to be also.

As Randy says, get the NWSL gear train. I have an older Rivarossi Mallet that someone re-motored many years ago with a Mashima 18 x 33 flat can that runs well, but the motor sticks out of the cab.

sounds like new engine time to me,clean old one and set in park with fence around it,, old engines had OVER sized flanges bad gear train crummy moters and the plastic shell has most likely warped.,not worth the troble or expense,,

If UP's legal dep't. sees this thread, they may want to charge you a retroactive licensing fee for upgrading that "should'a been" proprietary item.[:(]

I can't do that! what would 4884 say he would be devastated and besides for a 25 yr old engine apart from engine is still in good condition with an intact drive chain

Not all old AHC/Rivarossi's are junk. I have an RF&P Berkshire that really looks good, but doesn't run ewll because of that old motor. I'll try to contact NWSL.

Are these people good for other brands of motors too?

You are only going to find a handful of motor makers out there. NWSL uses Sagami, A-line /PPW uses Mashima. You might find a Canon or old GSB Tan Can on Ebay. NWSL is probably the best bet. The have Sagami's with single shafts, that you can probably order through the LHS. I have seen some singles on Ebay but not very frequently. I'm not sure what size you'd need, but the NWSL online catalog has them listed by size, shaft size and rpm.

Is that a 4005 Fergie? There were a lot of complaints about those 3 pole motors when they first came out, but the cans to replace them didn't come along for almost 10 years, if I remember correctly.

Yes that's the old original 4005. I might just turn it into a "dummy" and tow it behind my Allegheny or have a Camelback push it.

Or like the man said before....park it, put a fence around it and call it Fergus Memorial Park. Don't forget to dip a wide brush in white paint then flick on it to simulate HO bird droppings or the homeless guy sleeping under it.

Sounds like somebody's been to Denver!!! I used to be a member of the HO and the N scale clubs at the Forney, which is where 4005 rests. 20 years ago that's exactly how it was. Now you know the story behind my handle.

Yeah Fergie he is a little rusty but you know the old saying "rusty but trusty." He is subject to a little "knock and ping" now and then and some "run-on."

After being around him these last few months i can tell you he is quite used to being crapped on--lmao.

Put a Big Boy in a park with a fence around!? Over my dead body! That's mutiny! Anyway, I think you should make a dummy out of it. The guys are right, most of the old AHM/Rivarossi Big Boys had over sized flanges (because of traction tires?). And besides (no offense) the old Big Boys didn't look very good prototypicaly speaking. Some (if not all) of them were all black. Real ones had light gray/white smoke and fire boxes. Why not try looking into the new Rivarossi Big Boys? They're only around $220.00 (which I think is pretty darn cheap considering how big this locomotive is). Check 'em out.
