It is the number of stars next to your name. This in turn is based on the number of responses you have made. I think one star is 50 and two stars is 100. Don't know about three and up.Just a fun way to tell who has been posting alot and who is new.
Enjoy
Paul
If you're having fun, you're doing it the right way.

This is from a post back in November :

Stars represent ranking in reference to number of posts.

1 star = 50 to 99 posts
2 stars = 100 to 499 posts
3 stars = 500 to 999 posts
4 stars = 1000 to 1499

So post away and one of these days you'll see stars.

I don't like the "Total number of posts" method of ranking, because all it really tells me is how long a given person has been using the forum. Someone who has been here since day one will have a bunch of stars, even if lately they haven't been speaking up at all. Whereas somebody new, who is posting multiple replies every day, may only have one or two stars to their name.

It would be more informative if the stars were based on the number of posts within the past month, say. Then, it is a meaningful item, and with a smaller threshold for gaining stars, a new member would start seeing their rank go up rapidly. Also, someone who is "hogging the soapbox" by posting replies to everything they can (I know some of you are thinking my name belongs to this category) would get the more immediate feedback to see that they have maxed out their stars. I might be able to tell, by glancing at the ranking, that the person I am thinking of replying to is someone who just spouts off at every opportunity, or else that they are a normally quiet type with a genuine interest in the subject they're speaking about.

Another thing that could be done would be to award gold stars to persons who get replies to their topics, perhaps gold-silver-bronze-and blue to reflect the degree to which a person gets us all talking. This is a bit more involved, though.

The number of posts per month (or per week?) would be relatively simple to implement, I believe.

I have had two other names here, before the one I am using now, which is the one I use in other forums. The past MR forum had some thing weird that I couldn't have my present "handle". I think I have 5 numbers and letters and you had to have 6 or something like that. Then I formatted my hard drive and couldn't remember what my name and password was, then I used my sons for awhile.

Just the other day, some one bumped an old thread back onto the first page and I was reading a post agreeing with it all when I realized it was me who wrote it.....lol. My son's name is and was Cascade.

The problem with revealing post counts and stars is that eventually you get sniped at by fools who think it is a problem that you have so many posts. In the Atlas forum I think my count is 3,500 or something like that and every once in a while I and others with a high count get attacked. Again there were two Atlas forums before this one, so my count doesn't include those. And then I have close to 2,000 posts at trainboard.com where I moderate in the Layout Design section.

Part of the hobby is helping people out in the forums. This is kind of a pay back for people who helped me out and took me under their wing.

I got my FIRST star! I AM KING OF THE WORLD! (Okay...so I borrowed that line from James Cameron of 'TITANIC' fame.) [:D]

Those two stars over there to the left of this post show that I've been on here WAY to much. [:D]

Rank, hmmmm... means nuttin' to me. I really don't care how many times a person has replied or when they joined.

If I post a question, I'm hoping for an answer that will help. If the the answer I needed comes from a first time poster then great. If I read a post that I think my 2¢ would be of help to the poster or like this post, I just want to add my 2¢ then I'll add a reply to the post.

Rank, hmmmm... means nuttin' to me. a.k.a. dhuff
