Steam Detailing
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 1, 2003 11:19 AM
Hello All
I mainly model diesel locomotives and have recently purchased a couple of steam engines. One is a 4-8-2 (mountain) mohano and was wondering about detailing and weathering. I've done extensive detailing on the diesels (Athearn) but really don't know where to start as I am unfamiliar of the steam engine workings. If there are any suggestions or any links to helpful websites, it would be appreciated. Thanks
Richard

What road are you wanting? If it is a Canadian road, Canadian Railway Modeller has a review of steam engines in each issue. Their website is www.cdnrwymod.com.

They get their information from O-SHO-ME Plans, 109 Cornelius Pkwy, Toronto, ON, M6L 2K6.

You can pick up pictures of particular engines at the various flea markets.

You may also want to try the historical society for the road that interests you.

Good luck...Ken

I don't know about Web sites but I can recommend a couple of offerings in the good old print medium from Kalmbach Books. The "Model Railroader Cyclopedia, Vol. 1: Steam Locomotives," by Linn Westcott, includes a section illustrating the major systems and safety appliances used on steam locomotives, and "Steam Locomotive Projects and Ideas," by John Pryke, includes detailing, painting, and weathering techniques from Model Railroader Magazine. Both are available at hobby shops and in the shopping section of this Web site.

Good luck,

Andy

Hi Guys, thanks for the fast response. The road name is Reading and I've looked at there historical society but it looks as if they didn't have a 4-8-2 steamer in there roster and some of the similar models don't really look the same. I want it too look like a museum display piece, so pretty heavy on the detailing but light on the weathering.
Thanks

You might try the Fallen Flags web site for pictures. There are some labelled 4-8-2, but look top me like a 4-8-4. Anyway, here's the link: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/rdg/rdg.html

The IHC/Mehano Pacific (4-6-2) that I have is definitely a "generic" loco. It is lettered for CN #5125. CN #5125 was a "straight boilered", vestible (all weather) cab. The IHC Mehano is an open cab, with a "tapered" boiler. Not really clsoe at all, but I can pretend until I get something better...

Hi Richard;

The Mehano 4-8-2 is a model of a USRA Heavy Mountain, which limits you to C&O and N&W. FEC had some very similar locomotives. There some others that are pretty close too.

Get the 'cyclopedia Andy suggests. It is an unbelieveable resource.

The Reading never had a 4-8-2. My suggestion would be to look at the G class 4-6-2's and detail one accordingly to get a family look. the Fallen flags site should give you some pictures of G's. You'll want the G1 and G2's, the G3's were built in 1948 and are too new. many years ago a live steam modeler built a what if RDG 4-8-2.

Bowser sells detail parts for steam engines.

Try www.steamlocomotive.com. They should have pictures of 4-8-2's.
