How Can Stop This
Posted by JeremyB on Friday, November 28, 2003 3:03 PM
Hi Guys

I store my extra cars on a shelf and the cars are stored lenghtways so that I can take them off and put them on the layout, anyways I find they keep rolling off does anybody know how I can fix this?

Hope to hear some feedback

Maybe you should try leveling your shelf. That might work.

ya. that would probably be the smartest idea. or if it is level put a like a popcicle stick at the back of the shelf so the wheels catch on that.

For my shelf I glued an 1/8 inch length of wood dowel to the edge of the shelf. I used the doweling because I had it on hand. It would have be easier to use 1/2 round trim stock. The dowel leaves no square edges to snag things like coupler pins when the car is removed or replaced. The only problem I have had storing cars endways is that the ladders and some small details snag on each other. (tank car ladders are the worst. I am thinking of putting deviders between cars but have not got "roundtoit"

There is no such thing as a bad day of railfanning. So many trains, so little time.

A FEW THINGS;
I personnally would not store rolling stock this way.
But if you must, keep a divider between them ( 1/4 inch )
and be sure to put a lip on the edge of the shelf.
I have shelving that stores cars end to end, so that cars
do not roll off as easy.

I had car storage shelves over the active staging (fiddle) yard on my last layout. To stop rollaways I used a perforated foam shelf liner product I found at Target (I've also seen it at WalMart, Bed Bath & Beyond and other places). The liner doesn't require any adhesive to keep it secure and stops all rolling of the cars.

in that case since they are rolling forward put a popcicle stick on both ends. that way they won't fall back or forward. or find something longer so you won't have put each stick down individually.
