Making Snow

In my new layout I'm building has a area that has snow, will someone advise me how do you make snow, that looks good.

DO NOT USE the Christmas tree flocking stuff that comes in spray cans. It will bond with styrene and you'll never get it off should you change your mind later. In the 79-81 timeframe MR did a cover with a Zephyr in a snow scene (Rand Hood maybe) and discussed it if I recall.

Woodland Scenics sells snow. Comes in a shaker. Aahh, modern technology. Dave

Snow shaker? shouldn't that be a Snow Quaker? or is that a Quaker that shakes?

There was a two part article on how to make snow in the Jan. and Feb. 1996 issiues of Model Railoader, They are still available as bach issiues, The information is pretty useful for those wanting to do a winter time layout.

I used plenty of white paint (emulsion) onto bare plaster bandage, modelling clay, woodland scenics and just about anything else that came to hand. Before the paint dried I gave it a sprinkle with woodland scenics snow, and last but not least, sprinkled on some 'cake glitter' which is a very fine, sparkling powder.

A more in-depth explanation will appear in the January-February 2004 issues of Railway Modeller, If you can lay your hands on one.

The author of the previously mentioned MR article on snow is, I believe, the same individual who actually shows you how to do it in a segment on the Allen Keller video featuring Doug Tagsold's (sp?) layout. It's a very interesting and good looking technique, IMO. Too bad I'll never need any on my layout.
