Rapido CN "Emperor" Sleeper

101014 CNR Gr/Blk PS E series 4-8-4 Duplex Sleeper 'EMPEROR' (Super Continental Line)

My wife just bought me this sleeper car as a gift. I was checking it out last and I found the coupler on one end is very low. So low that it it doesn't attach to another coupler very well. I tried about a half dozen cars and engines to see what was going on.

On one end the coupler linked just fine to whatever I tried. The other end was too low.

Is there a way to adjust this, or is this a design issue ?

Is it in the vestibule end?  If so, remove roof and see if the interior bulkhead is being pushed downward. In turn, it would push the floor end and coupler box down.  Otherwise, I would still remove roof to see if something else is causing the floor end to be pushed downward.

I will check that tonight.

I emailed Rapido and they said that it may be that the underframe was warped due to the packaging being "too tight". He said I could dissassemble the car, steam bend the underframe and re-assemble. Or I could send it in to be fixed.

I was thinking that it may be easiest to use washers on the low end to raise the trucks and thus raise the low coupler. But I haven't had time to fully explore the nature of the problem.

I would like to try a simple solution first. A little disappointed though. It was the most expensive rolling stock I had ever bought.

ajelms.........   Washers on one end only would look funny with one end of car too high.  Having rapido do the fix for you sounds like the best way to go. My 3 Rapido cars are either GN or Np.

I just noticed you are in Halifax.  I've posted before on this board that my wife and I were stranded there on 9/11/01.  I just can not say enough good things about Canadians and how well they treated stranded people at the time. NS is most definately a beautiful place. The bonus was the trip home was not by air or highway.  It began with VIA's Ocean with all Budd cars.  So thanks to Halifax from my wife and I.

Happy Model Railroading, Garry
