The Kato NW2 looks very appealing to me.  I'm hoping a board decoder replacement will come out as I'm not real keene on soldering wires to these engines.

 

Though it fits well in the transition era I'm hoping to model around, want a few steam, and a few diesel and that as a switcher works for me.

i use an atlas N gp7 to pull and push cars in my yard. they pull 20-25 cars with no problem. i also have several atlas N mp15's but they will only pull about 6-7 cars so i sometimes have to mu them. my gp7 is running on dcc without a decoder and the mp15's have decoders installed niether has traction tires.

Hi, there are a few good ones like the Atlas MP15, the recently released Kato NW2 and LifeLike SW1200. All these are fine models.

If you model the modern era and especially have long, heavy trains, virtually any locomotive can be a yard switcher. I met a UP engineer a couple months ago who works at Mojave Yard in California and asked him what kind of switchers they used. They use pretty much any relatively older 6-axle loco for yard work, like SD60Ms or SD40-2s.

By the title I'm guessing N scale.

Are we looking for a steam loco, or one of those "D" word loco's (diesels)?

Any particular road names?

Is it going to be strickly a yard goat, or will it see some mainline action as well?

You are looking for a "Yard Loco" where??? I will presume your post title indicates N-Scale.

Kato just introduced an EMD NW2.  Life-Like/Walthers has an EMD SW8.  Atlas is currently marketing a Baldwin VO1000.  ALCO is/has been represented in this area with an S-2 from Rapido but I don't know whether this is currently available from Walthers or anybody else.  Neither, for that matter, can I tell you if anyone is still marketing anything (mis)labeled as an SW1500.  Atlas and Con-Cor are both marketing DC and AC models of the MP15, although these units with Blomberg Bs were designed to be used more as road units than yard units.

I'm sure I have missed somebody along the way.

You might even try a GP7/GP9/GP38 or a deturboed GP30/GP35; several railroads have converted these models to yard locos particularly if they frequently have to make short trips out onto the mainline to do their work.
