4 x 8 red wing layout

Hello I was wondering how many of you have built the red wing layout?  Also what were the pro's and the cons of this project.  Would you recommend this layout to anyone else.  Thanks in advance.  Kirk

I haven't built the layout, but, I did consider it strongly several times. It was one of the few  4x8 that I liked. I like the simi-hidden staging tracks. Center dividers on 4x8s don't appeal to me, as no matter how good you blend them, you still have a backdrop sticking out of the middle. But, the staging was pulled off pretty good on this one. It gives you a chance to do something other than run in circles, which is hard to avoid on 4x8.

I was also really attracted to the well executed scenery. Not goofy or over the top, just clean, well planned construction. I have referred to that article many times, sometimes just to look at the photos. Thats pretty good for a 4x8.

Rich do you happen to know the radius of the curve opposite the staging yard? Tks. Kirk

I didn't do it either...

But I too, really liked the layout and trackplan. Simple, straight forward with some real operating opportunities and totally wonderful scenicing!

I would have to pull out the issue to check for sure, but I believe that none of the radii in the plan was less than 18".

If I were going to do an 4x8...This is the one I would do!

What is a 4 x 8 Red Wing Layout? I've never heard of this.

It's your basic 4 x 8 layout that is named the red wing.  I believe it was in the model railroader magazine.

Anyone interested in viewing the Red Wing layout can do so at www.gatewaynmra.org/layouts/gcrr2.jpg.  I think this is a neat 4 x 8 layout.  Kirk

Kirk,

I don't know of any of the specifics off hand. Went into the train room to see if I had that issue, I beleive it's in my club's library. If you havent seen the actual MR article, it's worth looking for it. If you need inspiration or that final "push" to take the plunge, the article will do it. It's worth your effort!

I like the Red Wing except for the third inner curve..I like the yard area as well.

I would eliminate the third inner curve and use a curve switch to get to the industrial area.As a passing thought I would also add a run around.

There is a runaround besides the passing siding in this plan, but it is tiny, only big enough for a car or so. I don't know whether this was intended to make switching more mental processing-intensive, but I would do as Larry said and drop the inner curve and connect via a curved turnout. I'd drop the tiny one car runaround and add another on the inside of the passing siding. What I mean is have the runaround on the same concentric polygon line but instead of on the curve place it on the straight.

Another recommendation i'd make is to drop at least one of the yard tracks. You don't need four yard tracks to run this railroad. Use the freed up space to widen the mainline curve.

Astute observations, Yoshi and Brakie.I would'nt have thought of that. Checked out the index...says it's in the Dec. 94 issue.
