Down at the club, I ran 42 grain hoppers and 21 cabooses, two SD60s. My dad ran 150+ ore cars, 3 F-units. It depends on the size of the layout and the quality of the cars.

Branchline trains are running about 9-10 Cars. Mainlines are about 30. But I do not make up very mainy mainline trains becasue my mainine runs for aboout 4 feet once out of yard limits at the mement before meeting the edge of the world.

I like to run around 12 50' foot boxcars or the length equivilent. That and one or two GP engines seems to fit my layout.

I run my 0-6-0 pulling 7 cars.

I usually had a 2-8-0 pulling 4 HW cars, but since it broke down I run a doodlebug with a trailer.

depends which engine i have pulling.usually i have 10-12 cars per train but my atlas N&W's can haul 25 car trains.Long hood forward of course!

Train size 10-20 cars, 1-2 engines.

A coal drag is a solid train of coal cars. Not a unit train. A unit train is a single train with a single commodity going to a single customer or destination. A coal drag is a train of a single commodity, but it may go to many customers.

My geeps usually pull around 6-8 cars, makes my layout look bigger.

I model the Southern and L&N in the Blue Ridge mountains in the late 40's and early 50's. My layout room is 13 by 15 ft. The layout has 2.5% grades and lots of curves. All these factors keep train size fairly small. Double headed steam will normaly pull 10-11 40' cars and a caboose. Single locos will usually pull 7-8 40' cars plus a caboose. Some of the locos will pull more but trains much longer than this tend to overpower the layout. Having a locomotive entering one town or switching area before the cab clears the last one just doesn't look good to me.

My layout is turn of the last century. Thus the freights are 8-12 and the passenger 3 to 5. I use light/medium weight steam and which is close to prototype and fits my layout well.

Typically 3-5 cars intended for switching in sidings--but then, 44-tonners couldn't haul much more than that.

until i get more rolling stock and until i get my layout up it will be 1 locomotive pulling 7 cars. i have 2 locomotives and 14 pieces of rolling stock. i think i'll have my boxcars pulled by my CB&Q and my gondolas and hoppers (grain and coal) will be pulled by my BN loco.

The smaller engines handle about 12-18 cars. The larger ones some times move up to 35 on my tiny layout.

Road trains consist of 25 cars, 3 engines and caboose.
Unit trains which run the railroad with no intermediate switching include 2 piggy back trains, 1 auto rack train, 2 grain trains and 4 coal trains. All of these originate in staging, get engine and caboose swap on each end of my railroad.
All other trains are switched in one form or another. Staging for 39 trains.

How many pieces of rolling stock are in your trains. I ussually run 14 car trains with 2 locomotives. Also does any one model any unit trains of intermodal cars or coal trains. Also what is a coal "drag"
