When changing direction to forward it runs away at an alarming rate, it will respond to emergency stop so disaster is averted. So why reverse OK and forward off the wall? I haven't yet tried programming it on the programming track to adjust Top voltage and address changing address to Road#, etc. I'll try the programming track tomorrow-just wondering if anyone has some thoughts off the top of their head.

 Thanks.

OK, forgive me for seeming to "talk" to myself but thought maybe an update was in order. Sent defective decoder to Lenz North America at Chelmsford, MA and received replacement back this Tuesday. Was away for a bit and made it back home before winter reasserted itself. From 60 degree motorcycle weather to 20-30's and snow and sleet in two days. What a weather cycle! Reinstalled decoder in Proto 2K 0-8-0 and now runs flawlessly-in BOTH directions! Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Going to tune CV's for even better performance, right now running with factory defaults. Freight and passenger runs are going to suffer; I foresee an excessive amount of switching at mind boggling slow speeds!

Bummer is that with priority mail and insurance costs sending decoder to Lenz I could have spent those dollars on something a bit more productive to the layout.

OK, everyone, I spoke to Tony's Train Exchange from whom I purchased unit and the phrase "sounds like warranty problem, call Lenz NA at 978-250-1494" came over the phone instantly. Just off the horn with Lenz and they recognized problem before I finished explaining it. So unit is going in the mail to Lenz tomorrow A.M. first thing. Will hopefully wrap this up after warranty is exercised. I will keep all the helpful forum members posted on outcome.

I really wanted this to be a CV thing so it could be addressed over the phone.

That's not really making any sense what so ever.  It should be working fine in foward or reverse.

May I suggest you post to the Digital Plus By Lenz on yahoo groups.  They have someone from the company monitor this group and Lenz is very fast about responding to customer problems.

I have a Gold JST in my VO-1000 and it works smooth as silk!

BTW: Did you remember to set the speed steps to 128 on your cab for the controller?

And did you use the proper values for CV29?  http://www.tonystrains.com/technews/cv29-lookup.htm

Also check the forward trim (compensation between forward and backward starting voltage) Typically CV66  (This may or MAY NOT be supported by the Lenz Gold as it is listed as "optional" CV by NMRA...I don't have my manual with me)

OK. Did the programming track thing and reset to factory settings. Same result: desired reverse crawl speed, jack rabbit in forward. Next tried the CV29 thing where setting was running reverse as forward(abnormal forward?). With CV29 tweaked that way "forward" runs at desired crawl and reverse does the jack rabbit thing. Factory default for Vmax is 255, reset that to 100 with adjustment to Vmid to 50. Same jack rabbit thing going forward. CV5 and CV6 adjustments were accepted because the reverse crawl showed impact of adjustments. So,....me thinks I'll go into CV29 bit by bit and see what further fiddling I can do to correct problem.

One thing that intriques me about Lenz Gold JST is they have a provision in the CV list for different motors in locos. Can't see where that could be impacting performance in only one direction.(?)

Per Arnold, "I'll be back." If only to update on my trip through this Lenz thicket.

I've done the reset CV33 twice on operating track with no difference. Tomorrow(Tuesday) I'm going to the program track and I'll report back with outcome of same. See you tomorrow, thanks.

It sounds like CV2, Start Voltage, has somehow gotten set too high.  Try resetting the decoder to its default values and see if that helps.

Sounds like one of the decoders cv's has a faulty setting. Reset it to the factory defaults. If the decoder still acts up, send it back.
