I repainted one a couple of years ago for a friend of mine (though I really hated having to do so), and used a 50-50 mixture of Testor's wated based gloss black and flat black because it matched the rest of the loco. All I had to paint over on it was the silver areas also, and it turned out fairly well. About all the alcohol is good for on that loco is removing the original herald, numbering and lettering but not the paint.
