what are some other sites you go to to get information on this great hobby.

i go here
www.railroad.net
www.railroadforums.com

i'm talking about sites with forums. i haven't found any other good ones that are really active like this one. this is by far i think the best place to go.

railroad.net takes for ever to get questions answered in the beginner part and railroadforums is mainly realy RR with hardly any model railroading.

where do you go[?]

I've been spending a lot of time at the "micro design layout" web page lately. These are folks who focus on tiny layouts usually no larger than a few feet and mostly even smaller... even down to a couple of square feet or less! I really like that because you can seriously wrap your mind around something that size and truely give it the attention it deserves.

Yahoo has some good train groups for forums and here of course.

The Atlas forum is perhaps the busiest and has proven to be the most interesting "evolving" forum. Certain nights or days are dedicated to topics, such as Sunday Nite Foto Fun, midweek model critiquing, prototypical day, etc.

Also every once in a while a bit of history is made, each time unique. For example, one time the Model Power President came onto the N scale forum and made an a.. of himself. Some one had critiqued negatively the MP Pacific N scale engine, and he tried to roast in public the person doing the critique. Believe it or not, even CN got involved as the go between with the modeller who did the critique and the president. What was interesting is that the attempts by the MP president on the forum to discredit the modeller blew up in his face with many on the forum reacting to the negativity the President was displaying. The outcome: well CN worked a deal where the Pres of MP would send the modeller the second version the MP Pacific engine for review (the first one did have problems). The modeller reviewed it in the N forum.

The reason for the interesting evolution at Atlas is that it is one of the longest standing forums for RR modeller's. It has evolved from a very crappy forum that crashed a lot, was incredibly slow to load, to what it is today. I joined it in the early days and have been a member their in all their various formats, for around the past five years.

Trainboard.com is perhaps one of the most international forums, given its size and number of active participants.

Well said Rich.

I enjoyed the story. Has the MP president ever been back?

As well as the Atlas forum, I also visit the Yahoo site for small layout design, possibly the same one as mentioned above.

I had a look. Not bad at all, so I've added it to my favourites. its a bit difficult to read, though, since it's all onone page.

I too frequent the Atlas forum, and agree that it is the most active (that I've run across). But you have to be very careful. Being one of the best has drawbacks, because it tends to draw all sorts of characters from the woodwork. While I've been able to get a great deal of good information, sometimes it's hard to tell fact from fiction. There are often too many "experts" who share their wisdom (sometimes crap) on a subject and end up contradicting each other. Then there are those who just spout off without any regard for tact. While there is nothing new about that, (it happens here too) I see it occurring with more frequency on the Atlas forum.
