Just purchased an Athearn SD-45-2 with DCC and sound. I was able to turn the sound down. However, it was running rough (I would have to crank up the throttle to get it to move, and then it would move jerkily). Also, when I held the rear truck up off the rail the front truck would keep turning, but when I picked the front truck up off the rail it stopped immediately. So I pulled off the shell to have a look at the rear truck. But there was a speaker housing there. So I unscrewed the screw at the end, and the horizontal one that appears to hold the two speaker housing pieces together. I could get the first screw out, but the second one won't come out. It just spins in place.

I finally gave up, and tightened up the two screws, but now I have an intermittant short. When I wiggle the speaker housing the engine shorts out.

How do I get that second screw out to see what's going on with the wiring? Or do I send the whole thing to Athearn with a note saying, "Fix, please!"

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

You need to contact the customer service department and send it back.    The more you work on it trying to fix it could void the warranty.
