Here are some (fuzzy for some reason) photos of my Atlas RS11 (on its way to be a BCR RS18) and my VanHobbies/SAM RS18 (not the Alco Models version).  Maybe these help a bit or just add to the confusion?

Here are some measurements from CNR #3675 RS-11M in January 2003:

I braved the cold and ice to measure 3675 today at lunchtime.

I measured 62" (5' 2") from the railhead to the top of the platform and 106" (8' 10") from the platform to the top of the short hood.

This makes exactly 14 from the rail to the top of the hood.

Van Hobbies MLW RS-18, Alco Models "RS-18"
Top of long hood to running board : 9 feet
Top of long hood to railhead: 14 feet

Pathfinder, It does confuse me a bit because your measurements don't match the "HOSAM"  RS-11 dimensions  http://hosam.com/alco/rsdim.html or my P1K RS-10.

Well, it is an older (mid 80's) release, so maybe not so diligent on the dimensions.  I will pull out my Atlas RS11 tomorrow and see what I get with that.

Yes, it is a nice layout, but it's not mine. It is the "York Railway Modellers" club layout.

Here is a couple more shots of the layout:

Here are some from my VanHobbies/SAM RS 18:

Overall ht to top of fan: 14' 6"

Rail to walkway: 5' 9"

Walkway to top of long hood: 8' 9"

Help or confuse more?

Proto 1000 RS-11 Measurements
Posted by msowsun on Monday, January 15, 2007 2:59 PM

When they first came out, there was some complaints about the dimensions of the Proto 1000 RS-11 and RS-10/18's.

I found some measurements on this interesting site:

http://hosam.com/alco/rsdim.html

According to this website, the walkway should be about 5' above the rails and the walkway to roof top height should be about 9'.

I found that overall height of the PROTO 1000 RS-10/18 is about right at 14 feet. But it seems that the walkway is 6" too high off the top of the track and, as a result, the measurement from the walkway to roof top height is 6" too short.

Can someone compare these measurements to a brass model and/or Atlas RS-11 to see how they compare?

Thanks in advance,

Mike Sowsun
