I can't believe it

You didn't list the

BERKSHIRE ?? 2-8-4 ??

This is the engine that conquered the Berkshire Mountains in the East, hauling long drags of freight from Boston to Albany. Later, these locomotives where used in many other RR's in the East and Midwest....Cowabunga, how could you POSSIBLY forget THIS engine ??? Tsk, tsk This locomotive does NOT deserve "Other" classification.
Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! N&W class A - the Mercedes of steam. Faster and more powerful than any 12-drivered loco except the alleghany (which was three times as complex and cost 30% more,) the same tractive effort as a B&O EM-1 with four fewer drivers, able to cover for N&W's J on passenger runs.

Of course, I am rather partial to the J, as well!

Okay, so that explains why everyone is selling Big boys, but it sure does NOT explain the love affair with those ugly Pennsy Pacifics. A squared off firebox on a round boiler... oh yeah.... cool. :-)

Pretty cool... It was the 1955 or later the first time I saw and rode that train, when Knotts still had the gravel/grass parking lot it ran through on the North and Western side long before they fenced in the park.

The only other steam around was at Griffith Park on the back side, SF valley side noy
far from the Golden State Freeway (I-5).

Rode from Tennessee in '53 to Union Station, but have no idea what train line or locomotive we were behind, just the signs in the restroom, which was locked in town.
Didn't understand why, but remember the rails/ties below the toilet hole. Man, that made track maintenence a bad job!

Hooverphonic mentioned as my favorite band for the end of 2005 to March 2006.

I like the chunky firebox at the rear of the K-4 that looms over both the cab and the boiler. When I get my ducks in a row, I'm definitely getting a die-cast one of those with sound.

Also favour the 4-8-4 AT&SF (even tho' I'm a Canuck), and especially the 2-10-4 Selkirk that CP used to run. Of course, I'd have to rip out all of my curves and re-plan the main with 26' or better. Darn, eh? [;)][:D]

Oops, Clinchfield didn't have a 2-6-6-6. Those were strictly C&O and VGN. They were the horsepowers kings, but man it took a LOT of weight to get there.

What about the N&W loco's. The Y6b's were more powerful than the UP Big Girl, opps sorry Big Boy. B-) The N&W 'A' Class 2-6-6-4 more powerful than the UP Challenger, the DMIR 2-8-8-4's were also heavier and more powerful than the Big Boy.
And finally C&O and Clinchfield's 2-6-6-6! WOW there's a loco and a half.

At present my biggest is lionel O gauge 671 6-8-6 with 2671W 12 wheel tender but I'm looking at a modle power HO 2-6-6-2 Southern Pacfic . I'm going to see how it does with 4 old tyco santa fe passenger cars they have metal frames so they have some weight to them

I voted "other", not because there is any "other" not mentioned, but because I can't settle on just one absolute favorite. I like the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy, 4-8-4 northern and
2-8-2 Mikado. That's the best I can do as far as narrowing my list down...

Modern Cab-forwards-- 124,600 lb TE, 6000 HP at 40 mph
UP Challengers-- 97,350 lb TE, probably in the neighborhood of 6000 HP

Mikados. Of all the American locos, only the Challenger has a name as entrancing.

The Big Boy's size and power is something to make anybody sit up and take notice. The concept of articulaiton is just plain and simple genius. I think this is why I also admire the Cab-Forwards and Challengers. Oh for a railroad the size to accomodate a whole fleet of all of these.

Oh gosh, its hard to pick, their are so many good ones out there. But I love 4-8-4's in general, especially eastern ones, like those of the N&W, WM, and C&O.
I like most 2-8-0's. You could find them anywhere.

Steam, hard not to like it.

I like SP's Cab forwards. Big, powerful, backwards - what a combination.

Although I love them all, I had to go with the Northern arrangement because of the J. I still remember them from a half century ago, and of course when they rebuilt 611, and I will always think they were the most beautiful, awesome locomotives ever built.

Pacific K4 4-6-2. The now defunct railroad which once ran across Newfoundland (my birth place and where my parents still live) featured a number of these versatile work horses, where they functioned as both passenger and freight haulers.

I like the Hudson as well and the compact 2-6-0 Mogul, but none have the shine of the K4 for me.

Lessee...I like the Illinois Central steam- they had a class of Mikado that no two looked alike; but a second class of 'em that had some engines that looked identical to some in the first class! Square, sand domes, home-made. The AC9 Backwards Cab-Forward is gorgeous- with a skyline casing, it's just about the only streamlined articulated! Ever see one of the CB&Q'sK2 Ten-Wheelers? Little Belpaire firebox... Lovely little thing... As a matter of fact, I like most of "The Q"'s steam... particularly their 4-8-2- I like the D&SL 2-6-6-0s, the Ol' Russian 2-10-0, everything-Pennsy- the C&S narrow-gauge engines-RGS #20 4-6-0- YIKES! There are some that I never liked... 2-8-4s, for instance. But I just forked out $900 for an I.C. 2-8-4(they called 'em "Limas", not Berkshires...) by PFM- one of their last-1990- and now I love 'em! But I like ANYTHING that doesn't have a trailing truck! S.P. , Ma & Pa, N&W "W", Southern, D&RGW C-16-17-18(YEAH!) -19-21-25...Consolidations are all good with me. And Moguls. Love the Wabash. Love Nevada County N.G. #5(Buy it for me in On3, willya?) 10-Wheelers: Louisiana & Arkansas, the other one that is almost the same, SP's T1 & T-31, the aforementioned RGS #20, and a rear-cab 4-6-0 on the New York, Ontario & Western goes to the top of the list... right next to the Southern "10". And don't forget Casey Jones' , IC #382.. Odd whl. arrs.: AT&SF 2-6-2s- 2 classes- N&W 4-8-0s... Stop awreddy!!

S'now that I have mentioned virtually every steamer ever built... Jeez! I forgot the D&RGW K27 2-8-2!- I've always said I don't particularly like diesels. And, if I would, they'd be first generation. I just don't have the room...
