The ATSF ordered the modified "gullwing" cabs so that the diesels could clear certain coal loading structures.  The cab is slightly "notched" near the outside edges of the cab like in this photo:

versus the standard GE cab in this photo:

Hope this helps

Help- Dash 8-40BW Standard and Gullwing cabs?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 1, 2007 4:52 PM
I am wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between the Atlas standard and gullwing cabs for the Santa Fe (Red/Silver) diesel locos? I've looked at photos of some models, but I just cannot see what the difference is. Can anyone please describe to me (or show in photos?) what the difference is?
Thanks for the help:)
Roger
