If you use Lifelikes HO 2-8-8-2 as a comparison,
according to ModelRailroader March 2000 edition,
the review states that the 2-8-8-2 will run on 18"
radius...

To supplement my previous response, looking over the Rivarossi Instructions in 3 different languages,Rivarossi failed to give a good set of
lubricating instructions/diagrams. My Mantua instructions recommend lubrication every 50 hours of operation. Because of the # of crankpin screws
holding your side rods, you may wi***o consider a minature set of nutdrivers, 3/32 to 1/4, thus
avoiding stripping the the crankpin screws when
they become loose, and they will.

I run my HO 2-8-8-2 mallet on 22". I will leave it up to the pro's to advise if you can run it
on 18.LUBRICATION-SPARINGLY, hob-e-lube for the
side rods at your hobby shop.
For the plastic gears, I use white lithium
marine grease found at your sporting goods store.
This grease will not attack plastic and is heat
resistant. As an alternative, I could use, super-
lube, a multi-purpose lubricant with teflon made
by SYNCO, also available at your hobby shop.
