You have no idea how good we have it now in the authentic vehicle department. Years ago the only authentic vehicles were either European or Model Ts from Jordan. Bachmann and LifeLike and Athearn sold these generic things -- that were generally also a bit oversize and pathetic in detail.
What many of us did was purchase the shells for HO slot cars since at least some of them were actually models of genuine vehicles -- but had not been made with close examination in mind and besides you had to contruct a floor and wheels etc.
I do not even know if they still make HO slotcars -- I am talking early 1960s here.

I really like the Classic Metal cars and at swap meets you can get them at very reasonable prices.

Try Truckstopmodels.com, they have a large selection, Classic metal works are the sharpest followed by Busch, The variety of cars (American) after the 60's seems to be slim though,

[:)][:)]Just a note:

A few years ago I was searching for some good modern US fire trucks - need them for an accident scene
  • Pumper
  • Heavy Rescue
  • Rescue

I found nothing!!!!

I looked for each manufactor - resin kits - brass kits: NOTHING

Then I found them: A small manufactor in Frankfurt / Main - only 70 km away from me starts a production of kits of some very well made modern US fire trucks.

Most prototypes come from the eastcoast - First line NEW YORK.

My first one was the HEAVY RESCUE 251 - FD ABERDEEN MARYLAND. GREAT !!!

Here´s a link to the manufactor: MFÖ http://www.mfoe.de

The kits aren´t cheap but well detailed

You really should look at this site

http://www.1-87vehicles.org/

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Wiking,Busch,Praline,Mini-Metals,Herpa make good looking HO vehicles. Also contact
Eurorails in NY they market their own stuff (Vipers,Porsche 930 Bi Turbo, Ferrari F50
cabrios and lots of others.) The Generic Athearn cars are Specifically 1958/59 Plymouth
Station Wagon and a 1958/59 Cadillac Fleetwood they are pretty cheezy but look good
after several hours of detailing. Also check out VW.Com they got 2004 Toureg,Pheaton
Beetle and Beetle convertibles for about ten bucks apiece.

CBQ_guy, those Athearn autos are rather sad, about the same quality as lifelikes. ie no interior and grossly generic with plastic wheels. All mine are now in the back of the layout. FRED

I buy most of mine out of the Walthers catalog, they even have cars with working head and rear lights. Have fun.

Hi,

You and I are in the same boat! I did recently read somewhere that Classics Metal Miniatures, or whatever their name is, soon will be coming out with a 1960-something Ford Galaxy, 1968(?) I believe it was.

Also, apparently many years ago Athearn sold some generic looking station wagon kits in undec. and various colors which were intended to be loads. Also, they had a hard top auto, too. Well these are available again and to me they look pretty much like a generic 1960's automobile. And they're only something like three and a half bucks at discount.

Hi folks,

I'm with 'flee307', the classic metal works cars are really nice. I also use the generic autos and trucks that Life-Like makes, though they're mostly from the '50s.

Hey loco3, you don't need the vender number, you can just type in the vendor name in search or click on the vendor link and choose from the alphabit lising. You can also click on advanced search and search fo automobiles in HO only made by XXX. The search function has lots of filters. You can also buy a 2004 Walthers catalog and drool in it every night, it's better than dirty books.FRED

Besides the Walthers catalog, take a trip to e-bay. I recently finished 13 buys covering vehicles and people.
www.ebay.com click on toys, hobbies then click on model rr trains, then click on HO, then click on track accessories scenery.

Because there's so much I limited my viewing to "ending today".

Thirsty, want a Schlitz truck? www.ulrichmodels.com

If you can obtain the walthers vendor number and the stock number of the vehicle you can also go to www.walthers.com and type the number in the search box and you can get the price and a picture..
I did this all the time. I was comparing to the price on ebay.

Dale;

Please specify era, and location (for example 1965 to 1970, USA); and then you will get more specific answers.

Classic metal works easily #1 in my book followed by Busch. Some brand HO cars are really sad. check www.walthers.com for them with pictures. The Classic metal works cars are real sharp. FRED
