I don't think we purposely took this post off topic.  We just stated our opinions about a few things as we are here to do as well as share ideas.  I believe the original question from crabster was sufficiently answered.  I do know several people who do not care for Tony, but I am not taking anything away from his contribution to the hobby and do read his column regularly.

Guys, can we stay on track here? I started this post to seek out info on Lionels A&LS, not to discuss Mr Koester's character or column. If anyone can offer info on the A&LS, please, please post. If not, then go start your own topic. Thanks!

I used to have problems opening embedded Adobe Acrobat files in the Firefox browser - it would often freeze up and have to be killed.   Upgrading to the latest version of Firefox has cured a lot of this (I'm also using Acrobat Reader 7.0), although some websites just don't seem to like Firefox and it still occasionally crashes, and not just with pdfs.

Have you tried using another browser?   I find Opera more stable in this respect...

Let me add to Paul's comments that I too always find Tony's work thought provoking and useful in getting me to think in new ways. I may not always agree, but he helps me figure out what I like and don't like!

Guys,

No, we did NOT cancel Lionel's column, and it was very popular with the readers. (How do these rumors get started? - Certainly not from us!) In fact, we have another story coming from Lionel, he remains a valuable part of the MR team as one of our two Contributing Editors, and we hope that his schedule permits him to write even more in the future.

Regarding Tony's column, it remains very popular also, and remember: It's called "Trains of thought" for a reason, namely that we have asked him to write a column that pushes the hobby out farther than many of us go, especially in the areas of realism and operation. It's one of the ways MR serves the more experienced hobbyists. The internet rumor about Tony having an attitude is completely wrong as well. He's one of the nicest guys in the hobby and is always interested in learning from what others are doing.

We appreciate the feedback we get regarding the magazine on surveys, in letters, and here (when we have time to look, though we're not able to browse very often). And if you didn't like a story, or think it had errors, it's fair to say so. However, please consider this: Every time someone goes past commenting on a story and starts criticizing the author himself (or herself), not only do those comments make that author question whether or not it's worth writing the next story, but they probably discourage a potential author as well - and we'll never know what that new author would have contributed.

Thanks for your consideration, and most of all, thanks for reading MR!

Terry

I believe he was promoted and discontinued his column in order to spend more time on his railroad and other MR matters, but maybe there was something else. Either way, his column is missed.

I have to agree that I am not a huge fan of Tony's either.  I know he has a long history in the model rr scene but always struck me as having a bit of a I'm better than you attitude.  At least in his column.

Darrell, you have some other problem with your computer.  I just linked to the A&LS track plan (wow!) and had no problem at all.  And, yes, I'm using Windows XP and Adobe 7.0.  I'm no fan of Macroshaft or Adobe but have to admit that they're the worst software out there except all the rest (to paraphrase Mr Churchill).

But Tony's "drivel" is one of my favorite parts of MR.  "Different strokes..." and all that.

I always liked Stang's column too, he ususally had at least a few good tips in every one. It would be nice if he decided he has taken enough of a break now from the column and went back to writing it again. I know I'd look forward to it every month.

I agree with crabster about the A&LS. It's an interesting railroad from the photos I've seen in MR. I'd like to see more photos and a Keller DVD on the road.

Thanks for the links to his trackplan and TT.

This seems to be a timetable from his railroad.

Twice now I have tried to visit the Strang site.  Both times, my computer locked up!  I have to go to Task Manager to close out the window.

I even tried the old trick of copying the URL and pasting it in a new browser window.  It opens a window for Adobe, but won't display anything AND it locks up my computer.

It may be the new Adobe software.  I've had LOTS of trouble with the 7.0 version, to the point that I went back to the old 6.0 version.  Unfortunately, some sites don't recognize the older version and if you try to view something on that site, it downloads the newer version, giving you a bunch of problems along with it!

You would think that a company providing software would make sure the software works before unleashing it on an unsuspecting public.  And I won't even comment on Microsoft's new "Vista" or "Live One Care" except to say be forewarned!!

Thanks Bill! Does anyone know of any pictures of his layout out there on the 'net or if MR ever did a feature on his railroad?

Does anyone know of a website or resource regarding the Alleghany & Lackawanna Southern that Lionel Strang built? I would love to learn more about his layout and would like to see a trackplan and pics! Thanks!
