Computer controlled layout

Last year while visiting California I was lucky enoght to meet a rialway "nut" and invited to see his layout. This layout was totally run by computer/s. He was unable to find the information on construction of the parts (curcitboards etc) of this system, so has anyone any information on this subject.
I know he was using two computer power suppiles to run the whole system.
Unfortunatly he is in the military and has been moved and not got back to me yet with additional information.[:D]
