Oh my gosh! Duh!!!

I just viewed my question and now am feeling kind of STUPID as far as an avatar is concerned. I don't really know what I did, but I did it in my profile area.

That is a picture I took of an area of a home layout of one of the guys that formed a modelers group some 30 years ago and that I joined about two years ago. I guess you could say he's into Pennsey.

Can someone tell me, in layman's terms, what is an avatar?

Also, how is an avatar, images, videos, or anything else (like inserting smilies) displayed in a message? I have placed a few images in photobucket, but am not sure how to get them from that site to this site.

I've tried to interpret some of the messages displayed by some of the members, but feel like I am in a 1st year computer images class where everyones' IQs average 150, compared to my 60!!!

I would like to share some of my pix, but don't really know how to go about it.

Thanks for any help that you can give.
