How many folks out there remember an ad in MR or RMC or any other modelrail magazine, actually stating that PROTO had released the RS-2's. I don't but all of a sudden, like over a two week period, all are gone or being hoarded by some unscrupulous distributer, trying to jack up the prices. Hobby shops here in Florida are hard pressed to even be able to find one any where. What happened[?][:(!][:(!]Did PROTO just not produce enough, or is this the beginning of some LIMITED PRODUCTION Scheme to get prices up and out of sight. [?][:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!]

Hi E, I know how you feel. I tried for 2 years to get a Frisco E unit. The Proto runs seem to be limited in number. I finally did get one but it was at higher than list price and was on consignment. I don't know if they do this on purpose to jack up the price or not. It sure does seem that way. Last Christmas they released another run of Frisco E units. I called all around even to other states. I finally found 2 new ones and had them hold them for me. They were in Springfield, Missouri. My parents live there so I drove up to visit them and to get my new E units. The ones they held for me were the only 2 they had. Something sure is fishy and stinks about this whole deal. It makes me wonder too, if they do this to drive the price up. Makes me wonder if they sell gasoline too. [V]

P.S. I never did get a pic of that "NYC car". lol [^]

I think that Life Life, makers of the Proto line, as well as Bachmann and other manufacturers, announce a new item several months before they actually begin production just to build up a demand and see how many they should make. I have noticed this trend for the past several years, ever since manufacturers all shifted their production to China. Bachmann, especially, seems to announce a new product nearly a year before they actually have any available.

This is cause by the Limited runs that the manufacturers seems to enjoy..First they "bait" the water by requesting pre-order..But this a really a ploy.If the pre-order is say 50,000 of a given locomotive they will make more then that-the only exception to this seems to be Kato which has been known to cut the production run.
Then they will set the price by the pre-order demand..Then come the wholesaler..He will first sell to his bigger and best customers, then the little shops gets what is left over if that hobby shop's is up to date on their account..
So we are caught in a trap. And who design this trap? Sadly we did.

My hobby shop guy says he has to preorder just to get items from Walthers, esp. limited and expensive units like bigboys, spectrums, and proto2000s in popular road names. He says if he don't he won't get them, so they sometimes gather dust on his shelves.

When it comes to limited runs, they aren't as limited as people would lead you on to believe. Limited runs can go quickly in a location that has or had the prototype. So logically BC Rail items sell very briskly here in Vancouver, BC, Canada; but not so briskly in Oregon. So if you can't find something locally, then think globally. Who might have the item. How about a dealer in New York, or Ontario, or Texas, or California. Let your fingers do your walking on the computer internet.

About two months ago, people were lamenting on the Atlas Forum that they couldn't get any N scale, SD70's (I think) heritage scheme BNSF. And you know what, when I told those same people there were plenty of them at a store in Vancouver BC, not one ordered from there. Take of your local thinking cap and put on a global one.

At one time I got so irritated with people whining about not finding items, I said I would start a service and charge $20 to find the loco they wanted - no takers. So whatever you believe the planet is out of, I promise there are more out there.

Also limited runs have a habit of re-appearing on the used markets or at local shows. I stopped getting the "limited run" paranoia a couple of years back; and what I want always re-appears a year latter, after the feeding frenzy.

...........................Gotcha, but it just seems odd that only one or two shops in all of So Fla were able to get them and only a very small number at that. Believe me, So Fla has a very large following of every major road in the country[V][V][V][V]Thanks anyway, I'll keep trying to find them and as you said think GLOBAL. Good advise.

She's a southern girl of Irish descent, I don't even want to think about it. CRUSH, BANG, CRUSH[xx(][xx(][xx(][xx(][:D]After 33 years together I've got a good working formula, when I'm with her we do what she wants to do, when I'm alone, I do what she wants me to do, what can I say. She's a fantastic girl, just very given to her opinion, and she lets me know , promply, when she doesn't like something. Most wives of 33 years have figured out by that time that the guy is in it for the long haul, so they think their the boss, and their usually right[:D][:D][:D]

Don't know what happened there, but almost all my posting went down the tube and all was doing was editting a little. Any way you get the jist. She may like SANTA FE but she's moderatly conservetive so now-a-days, we stick to colors like BRITISH RACING GREEN or white or brown. Anyway, I still liked NYC but I also like to eat[:D][:D]
