Kalmbach has said that the coin is yours regardless of whether you keep the DVD or not.

The truly unfortunate thing is that the DVDs were a really great idea but MR ended up doing them on the cheap by filling them up with about 70% recycled material from the Tracks Ahead series. That pretty much took the value out of them for anyone that's been in the hobby for more than a short time or had access to the TA series on a PBS channel.

If the DVDs had been done on say a quaterly basis, with all new (or at least not previously aired) material on various aspectsof the hobby (tools, techniques, project layouts, layout tours), they could have had a runaway success. As it is, I'll be surprised if they last more than another half dozen installments.

I got vol. 1, but it wasn't that great. Or, I should say, it had good stuff, but I had almost all of it in other formats already. Give me a break!

I got mad when they first sent those DVD's and then wanted me to subscribe to it or return it. I was sort of surprised Kalmbach did that. I must not have been the only one because after the third notice they told me to keep it (after I had already sent it back) LOL. Are they any good?

No...I sent #2 back and have received #3 and #4. An original selling point was you could keep what you liked and return those you didn't, without loosing your subscription to the series.

Just buy the DVDs of Track Ahead. If I remember correctly from volume 1, the Dream, Build, Plan DVDs are about 2 hours of material and will cost $20 plus $5 s&h. That is about $12 per hour. Go to http://www.mptv.org/tracks_ahead/index.php and you can buy a season of Tracks Ahead, 6.5 hours, for $30 plus $5 shipping or just over $5 per hour. It is a much better deal.

I'd have to agree with bnnrailroad. I just received Vol 4 last week and viewed it the next day. I don't think Vol 4 is as good as the first 3 volumes, but I will keep it anyway.

I have seen most of the Tracks Ahead programs on TV and I don't have any on video. This DVD series from MR re-uses portions from the TV program and since I don't have any tapes from the TV show, it's nice to have the information on the DVD's.

There were some interesting parts in Vol 4, even if they were a "re-hash" of provious material. So far, I like the series well enough to keep them.

The mounting board for the commerative coins that come with DVD's has space for 7 coins. Either MR will produce 7 DVD's or they will provide another mounting board for additional coins from additional DVD's. I can't imagine that MR would stop at 7. This is kind of like the old Time-Life series - as long as you keep buying them, they will produce additional volumes for you to buy! Theoretically, there could be NO END to this series!

I haven't viewed any of the .pdf files on the DVD's. My computer doesn't have a DVR yet. I'd like to see if the .pdf files have more information than what's on the DVD.

Since you are asking about Vol. 2, you must have started late in recvg them as I did. I just recvd Vol 2 this week. Enjoy the series and look forward to next Vol..

I suspect they'll run the series until MR runs out of Tracks Ahead filler material! I note that Vol. 4 is between 2/3 and 3/4 old Tracks Ahead stuff. Not sure yet whether to send it back or not...I've got copies of Tracks Ahead on video already.

Does anyone know how many DVD's will there be to complete the set? If this goes on every quarter for a couple of years, I may stop getting them. On the other hand, if there may only be a few more in the works, I'll keep it coming. I still haven't had time to see the first volume completely.

Thank you,

I'm not sure what you're refering to. I just received volume 4 in the mail the other day. Do you mean there is a different version coming out? If so, the quickest way to answer the question is to send an e-mail to MR.

Dream, Plan, Build DVD.....Rumor or fact
Posted by cwclark on Thursday, June 8, 2006 7:29 AM
A lil' bird told me that there was a second addition of the Dream, Plan, Build DVD being sent out by MRR to their customers...is this true?..and if it is, how long will it take to recieve a copy in the mail?..(I guess the second part of this question (if it's a valid question) is directed at the MR staff).....chuck
