How do you insult the rail? do you call it brass when it's really nickel silver? Sorry I just couldn't resist it was just too good of a straight line. :-)

I'd use unwanted decoders to control the lights in passenger cars and cabeese. I'd like to see the decoder manufacturers come out with $5, one-function decoders to do this. I know DIGITRAX makes a "lighting decoder" with no motor output, but it costs more than a 2-function basic fleet decoder with motor output. Right now, I'm back to insulting one rail of a siding and using a toggle switch to shut down the power, just like I did with DC.

There may have been discussed before, but after reading the RMC article about using a SoundTrax decoder to operate powerhouse lights and sounds I started thinking about using some of my old decoders to create special effects on my layout. For instance, I plan a donkey engine to work in my mine to raise the ore. I have a couple old MDC decoders that are so crappy I'll never use them. I might use it, in conjunction with motor, to run a cable and pulley system.

Then I started think that maybe I could mis-use the old decoder light functions to run a tortoise (I know they have decoders for that).

What have you guys thought of?
