This is what I'd recommend:

As for locomotives, how much running punisnment it can take will really depending on size and scale. The smaller the scale, the less continuous running it will put up with. During the Christmas holiday season, we have a G scale display layout that we run in our office lobby from late November to early January. The same locomotive and cars run around the oval of track for 10 hour periods each day and we've been using the same locomotive for years. If you are working with something smaller like HO scale or N, the best bet would be to have several locomotives and run a different one each day.

Continuous running for display purposes will not hurt your transformer as long as it is placed in a location where it can cool properly (don't burry it a box or under scenery where it can't get air. In your case, if you can screw it under the display where it can still breathe from below, that would be fine.

I'm really sorry to bother everyone here, I'm not a model train fanatic, but I do have an old Thomas the tank engine at home. I am a cinema worker in Australia, and for the upcoming release of Finding Nemo, we have to set up a display to win $5000. Thats all good n'all, but the thing that I REALLY want to do, to make the display stunning, is get schools of cardboard fish and attatch them to my model trains, and have them moving throughout the display. The trains would be operating below a paper mache terrain, with the fish attatched to carriges moving above the surface of the terrain.


My question is, will there be a problem with running this trainset for very extended periods of time (we are talking 9am till 11.30 pm, daily, for 3 weeks.)

[?] Will it simply blow the motor in the train (the train will be moving as slow as possible mind you),????
[?] If it won't ruin the train motor, then will it ruin the transformer that give the track power?
