looks like you've looked into things pretty well. Most i have seen in N scale with regard to sound is what you have already mentioned - dummy units and permanent right-behind-the-loco cars (tender, boxcar, et al). However the main problem with N scale sound is the size of the speaker - they're really too small to give you really good sound.
however, if you went with under-the-table sound, you could get better sound (but you'd have to trade-off the sound moving with the loco(s) for that). I don't know of any sites that would help you though there are many here who have all kinds of websites up their sleeves (or more personal experience).

I want to build an n scale layout on 2 hollow core doors but DCC and sound is a given. I would perfer HO but I dont have room for more that a 4x8. NH or NYC in the 1940's is a druther. I see few RTR loco's at n scale with dcc sound.
A PA, E7, 1 steamer. (forget what kind)
Can dcc sound be added to a n scale desiel? It looks like the answer is no unless it is a dummy. Switchers look out of the question.
Add sound to a tender? looks like maybe?
Add sound to a boxcar or baggage car right behind the engine?
Under the table sound?
Is there a good web resource on this subject?
