Ditto's on Sask's and coaldiger's reply. I have 50 some years in this hobby. The best layout I had was my old Lionel on a bare plywood board with all my nonscale buildings and such. Ah--- memories!! Anyway do as you please, it's your train. I strongly dislike the idea we have to compete with each other (I don't mean your that way). As for my opnion: if I had the space for it , I would have two layouts. Best regards, Ken

Use both. I,ve been using "s"guage American Flyer as my operating layout and "n" guage as an amusement park theme for years and it works well. Also from a prospective point you could use the HO set in the background and make it to apear further away than it actually is.

Hi,
I can see your predicament. I actually ended up with two layouts (one HO and another O and S together). The O and S gauge isn't a scale appearing layout, but rather a toy train operation. If it was me in your situation, I'd go for the MTH. You can fit more trains into one space with HO, but O gauge trains are a lot more noticable and can really be a blast to operate. But remember that that is what I said I would do. This is your layout and not mine. The best advice I can give you is to do what you personally would like the best. One of the best parts of this hobby is being able to build a layout all your own. The best layout you could possibly have is the one you like the best. Don't be concerned with what all the other guys are doing or what the magazines say. The important thing is that you like your layout, regardless of what anyone else thinks. Look at different kinds of layouts and see what appeals to you. It could be a very detailed scale layout, a highrail layout or a tinplate type layout. You could even run both trains together. I've heard of layouts that combine multiple gauges and have beautiful results. You could even have two layouts by having legs on top of your layout that hold up another board of the same size above. If you do decide on just one, you could run the other train alog the edge of your wall on a shelf or else use it to run around your Christmas tree. The important thing is that you have fun!

I have two trains, an old American Flyer HO scale and a new O scale MTH Rail King with Protosound. Up until now I didn't have much of a set up, the trains just went in an oval on a big sheet of plywood. Now my table is about 12' X 18' with trap doors so I can reach everything. Its pretty cool!! Anyway, now that I have a real table, I want to add scenery; however, I can't really do it to scale. What should I do? I have my fathers old HO American Flyer that I want to use, and I have a new O MTH. Should I get rid of the O and replace it with a new HO? I love my MTH, but I'm also worried that even though I have a big table, that making everything in O scale will take up too much room. I think doing everything in HO would look better and bigger. What do you think? Did anyone else have a problem like this? Thanks for helping
