N scale F59PHI Trains and P42 & Superliners, etc
Posted by bluepuma on Friday, July 18, 2003 2:13 PM
Last year got the Kato P42 set and the 8 car superliner set, Phase 4, 4 MRC and recently the Athern F59PHI in Amtrak West. Two of the new locos look real nice pulling the Superliners, I have no complaint about the locos other than it
is hard to uncouple then by lifting one off. Look nice, sound ok.

Waited a long time for these, wanted them from when the HO model was released.

My question is: What cars are run with the Amtrak West F59PHI?

They only run a single loco? I got for Dual locos. Gotta be A/B or A/A!

The double height Superliners match the F59PHI, the P42 is lower, but I see some cars for the F59PHI have low ends, high middles, they don't match
the loco.... What set is Amtrak West paired with?

I need at least one P40 in Accela paint, phase 5, and want the Accela in N scale too.

My wife thinks I have enough passenger trains, but when the time is right, one or two more!

Guess you will have to use your F59 on Superliners for a while. I think Amtrak West runs mostly on the California corridors. The Pioneer/Desert Wind can still run on your layout with a 4 car split of Cal Zephyr cars. When I rode the Pioneer, if I remember correctly, Amtrak ran 1 F40 with a coach/baggage car & a diner car from Seattle, then tacked on 1 regular coach & 1 sleeper from the CZ in Salt Lake city that had come in from Chicago. Nobody nakes Nscale horizon or amfleet cars to make up a Chicago corridor train, like the Quincy Zephyr or the Ann Rutledge. Nobody makes California superliners. The Athearn bombadier commuter cars haven't arrived yet, but could be soon.

I'm curious if you can compare your F59 with the P42. Which makes the most noise? How about prototype speed range? for the money, which would you buy again?

Have fun Nscaling.

From my experience the kato p42 genesis starts at a lower speed, has ample power to pull the kato 8 coach set,and is very quiet. The f59phi from athearn has a pleasing appearance, but starts at a much higher voltage, thus reducing the speed range.
when using them in a double header setup, both facing forward, the horn of the coupler of the leading loco comesup against the snow plough befoe coupling is achieved. cutting the horn off solves this problem. Both deserve a place on a modern n gauge layout.

Looks like the ConCor "Surfliners" would be a good match, but C/C still hasn't got them out, no pix on their site, but a pix in their catalog.

I just liked the way the F59PHI looked, more so than the P42, but now the Acela paint
P42 is available. Saw one Saturday (P42 in Pz5 paint) at Mendota, aimed at Chicago with 4 single level cars, one really round one with inside bearings, not outside truck
side frames.

The P42's are great locos, as is all my Kato no complaints. The F59PHI are good enough, wanted them when the HO models were released, been a long wait. More noise, but not much, nothing to set my teeth on edge, unlike my Atlas GP9TT or SD35, and nothing like my B-Mann F7A/B.

Plan to buy more Athern when they build other models of what I like or think is *Beautiful*

Amtrak West units (the Blue/silver ones) show up on:
Surfliners (no cars in either scale available yet.)
Capital/San Joaquin service (central California)(Again no cars yet)
Pacific Northwest service
Coast Starlight
and the Southwest Chief from time to time.

You could model a Pacific Northwest train. While most of the trains run the Talgo equipment, I think there is at least one set of Superliners running on one route.

The Coast Starlight is the connection for the north/south/middle of the west coast, so all varients of the F59PHI make appearances during routing maintenance windows and transfers and stuff.

You could make an argument to run an F59PHI at both ends of and all Superliner consist and 'say' it's a Surfliner. (Assuming a cab car is not available, and using the 'spare' Supers in the Surf car places. A bit of a stretch, but plausible. Just don't substitute in any Sleepers, but all other cars 'could' be used.)
