How many locos do you put on the haed of the train and do you use pushers.
I double head and i also put 5 units up front. i also use pushers.

Depends on the weight of the rolling stock (and loads) in the train and the HP of the locos pulling it!

I usually shoot for 2 HP/ton. But then again, Iowa doesn't have much mountains!

Of course, I run short trains (Rarely more than 6 cars), and only have a bit of power at the moment.

Of course, the prototype can do interesting things, I saw a CP GP38-2 and GP9m heading 2 covered hoppers and a caboose in the CN yard just east of Toronto Union Station yesterday. Way more motive power than necessary, and a caboose, in this day and age.

GDRMCo, most of us can read your posts without your having to resort to size 6 type in red! Having a railroad that is 2 feet wide by 4 feet long in N scale, I seldom need more than one locomotive on a train, except at shows, where I occasionally put two Diesel units on a train. A pair of SW9's back to back look interesting at the head of a train.

GDRMCo, most of us can read your posts without your having to resort to size 6 type in red! I usually run one engine on my freights. The only trains that get more are switching runs (Baldwin S12 + EMD SW1500), passenger trains (one F40PH, 2 F7s, or an F40-F7 combo). The reason I run 2 switchers, is that they're wired together. The S12 is pretty light, and having the dummy SW1500 tied to it increases the power pickup.
