Forum is still to slow
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, July 9, 2003 10:58 AM
The forum is still a bit kluncky for uploading and downloading. I changed my settings to "show 5 days" and it took almost 30 seconds to load - I'm on cable. When I hit the new topic button for this post I timed it and it took 10 seconds for the Post New Topic screeen to come up. My replies are taking excessive time as well to other posts, and downloading other threads is taking too long.

I'm sure you are still working out bugs, so I will be patient for a while.

It has been giving lots of error messages to new posts and replies:

An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator at webmaster@kalmbach.com. Thank you.

I don't know if this post will make it through.

I agree, but Trains.com has always taken at least three times longer to load than any other website I visit on the internet! I am on a slow dialup (44000-45333bps) and my Pentium S only runs 166MHZ, but other sites do load much faster. But, IMHO, it's not the forums, it's the whole Kalmbach system and server.

Really? Today? I was sure that was taken care of yesterday. I'll look into it.

To be honest, I think the biggest problem is the load and configuration of our **cough** ad **cough** server. Anyone who is running something like Norton Internet Security will probably notice that the pages load much quicker without them. We're tentatively scheduled to work on the ad server in a couple of weeks.

Another task on the to-do list is to look at what affect the new forums are having on our database server and identify any areas we are having performance problems.

So please bear with us. We're working on it.

Just to reiterate. I found that after I loaded Norton Internet Security... THAT ALL my down loads moved slower. Many times, things we down load do have an effect on the speed of the computer.

I always wondered if y'all were running this site off a 286? I dial up at home usually over 44kbps and at work we have something fancy like a T1 or something but this site has always been slow.

Still, much of an improvement. If it starts loading quickly, I think you will start seeing a lot of traffic. - Ed

I'm on a T1 line and this site is slow. While I really like the changes to the format (a real nice job!), the slowness of the site will likely make this just another secondary MRR forum with hardly any traffic. That would be too bad, because Kalmbach Publishing (being a leader of MRR publications) really ought to be leading the way in on-line MRR forums (and not Atlas).

I agree... speed of the site will determine its success... if slow and kluttzy... it will not be as successful as hoped for I'm sure. Why do people want to stick around waiting for things to happen when they can go to another forum with faster response, and thus more participants with even more replies?

Speed and organization of sites determines their success. This site is now well organized, don't let speed be your downfall.
