Bob;

The GP40X locomotives were the pre-production prototypes for the GP50.

GP45 would not have been logical, as the 45 designation was for V20 engined locomotives. The 40 series and 50 series were V16 engined.

Been wondering, if the EMD GP40X had caught on would it have been called the GP45? If they paralleled the SD series that would be the logical designation.
