I'm used to looking at the former Conrail tracks around here, and I swear that the ballast looks huge. I use medium ballast on N scale.

This is all off topic, of course, but thanks Chris. You made me smile! [(-D]

I have to use the fine N scale ballast on my N scale layout. As far as scale goes, it is still much to big, but scale ballast in this scale would have the texture of sifted flour. Unfortunatly, sifted flour glued between railroad ties looks like sifted flour glued between railroad ties.... Every scale has its drawbacks.

I also use Fine ballast on my HO layout. For the same reasons listed above.

I use the fine balast (N scale) for my HO. If you look at real balast most of the stones are about 3" ish, now if you take an HO figure and put its foot on a Med (HO scale) stone it is about the same size as the foot making the stone about 10"-12". If you use the fine ballast the stones are about 1/2 a figures foot making the stones about 4"-6" in size. It is still a little too big but looks alot better when you have figures standing in the ballast.

A Veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life."
