Atherns are well made but sometimes burrs on wheels and/or gears will cause excess noise. Use a magnifier to carefully inspect the parts and reassemble them while moving the parts to find the minute hitch in the getalong that will be a noise at speed. I lapped one gear set with toothpaste and it runs at half the current.

For starters, please try this site.

I'm not an athearn owner but perhaps this will help.
