box cars G & D, MER

I have two box cars, one a Gorre & Daphetid 40 ft # 8409 plastic kit, the other a wood kit with a whale belly center frame, the side pandels are printed for the Mid Eastern Region NMRA 1946. As I write this I am building the G & D car. I am concerned about painting the underside of this car. I usually paint everything underneth grimey black. To do so on this car might hide all the great detail. Any ideas? The MER car has been partly assembled, the sides, roof, underbody, and ends are compleate. The doors and door sliders are missing as is all other detail. The ends, roof, and underbody are unpainted. Does anyone know what colors to use, was there any thing printed on the doors, what kind of doors? I guess I should use sanding sealer on the bare wood. Ben
