Think of turnouts like a knight in chess. It moves 2 steps forward and one step over.
A #4 turnout moves 4 steps forward and one step over. A #6 moves 6 steps forward and one over.

The turn out side of the switch is a tighter radius on a 4 than on a 6. Shorter cars (40'-50') work OK on smaller # switches. Longer cars(85' passenger and auto racks) need a higher # switch. #6 or #8 even.
