The Greenville and Southern Railway (my empire) resides in a half-finished, humidity controlled (45%) basement that is a constant 68 degrees.

Computer room for my Z scale diorama in my main appartment, and spare room for my in-progress Z scale empire (6.50m X 4m, roughly 21' x 14'), in my vacation house.

I have two...
My small one's in the garage, but the big one's still in my head! I plan to build it someday in my storage shed (the only place at my house large enough to support what I want to build without compromising other things).

No it is not in a cold basement. The walls have been insulated and drywalled. There is a drop ceiling in place and I have over 40 8 foot fluorescent lights in place. The room has all of the electric in surface mounted conduit under the benchwork.

The room is 25 feet wide and 75 feet long. It was specially built for the layout with no windows (as they would have been covered over anyway – and they would have just left in the cold air) and an extra row of blocks to give a ceiling height of over 8 feet. The furnace and water heater are upstairs so that leaves NOTHING in the way except the posts that hold the center of the building up.

Even the stairs are not in the train room. They come down from the work shop and are located in a foyer just off the basement proper. I have an office/computer room which is not part of the basement but is located adjacent to it. I also left enough room in the office to expand the layout into this area but will be an around the walls addition.

Had to wait for 30 years to get attic to use as a computer and layout room. But it was worth it!

My wife and I are temp renting until we get back up into civilization. My 12 X 14 layout shares an attached shed with my workshop. The layout seemed to get ever larger as I built it to the point that now when I have to work on the bench I have to suck in my gut. As a result I just go outside and use my Harley trailer as a work bench. May my Harley rest in peace! (lost her during Hurricane WIlma).. I too have to contend/live with Racoons as well as squirrels and very large Iguanas. We have several of those babies living in the tree overhanging the shed. I leave the outside shed door open for ventilation sometimes and if I am not paying attention no tellin who or what will come in to check out the layout. Biggest downside to being down here in the FLorida Keys is that I think I am the only MRR within a hundred miles if not more.

mine is in a spare building - outside...the room was originally used for garden tools and lawnmower / car repairs...I ended up taking down the garage door and bricking up the big hole, laying carpet, installing some overhead lights, and wahlaa! a detached 23' x 25' train room..it's kind'a layout inside / away from the house outside...chuck

In the garage where its hot-as-hades in summer and cold in the winter, and out in the backyard around the patio.

My layout is tucked up in the attic of my 90 year old home.

There's no heat or ac but that hasn't affected any of my benchwork or track.
It's out of the way & built low enough so I'm usually the only one that get's to play with it unless my daughter wants to play as well.
The main reason why it's built low is the roof line.
In my signature you can see the roof pitch& where the walls meet the roof is only about 36 inches so I built the benchwork lower than this so that I can include scenery as some point.

When I move, it will get built higher, but until then...

My layout is currently in one of the outbuildings on my grandmother's farm. We have an agreement that I can keep the trains there...as long as the rest of the building is cleaned up. Trains are upstairs, storage and fireplace downstairs. The building isn't insulated, but with a fire going, it usually doesn't get too bad :D

We were fortunate enough to have our house built with a finished basement for a family room / home theatre with baseboard heating in addition to the forced air heating and AC. I had our contractor close off a separate 11' x 19' room also finished just for the layout and an adjoining utility room / workshop [:D].

Warm basement. I have a portable dehumidifier that heats it a bit, but keeps it dry. However, in the "winter" (as cold as it ever gets in the NW), I have a monster wood furnace that heats the whole house. One corner of my 11X8 layout is exactly 19" from the furnace, per code.

I will be away from trains from about tomorrow until the basement is finished over the next 3 or so weeks. I will have to place the layout on casters, remove all items that could tumble, and cover it all with plastic to keep drywall dust away.

I voted outside because it's going in an 8x20' trailer (insulated, with heat & AC).

Mine is under construction in the "room-formerly-known-as-the-garage." About 3/4 of the garage was walled in and is now sort of a spare room. That's where my layout is going. My wife calls it my "hobby room" because my RC planes live there, too [:)]

The remaining 1/4 of the garage is my workshop where I'm currently building benchwork.
