Russ,
You can probably use latex caulk to fix the track to the inclines directly, but pay attention to what James says above. The beginning and ending transitions back to level will be severe unless you alter the grades at that point. The steeper the grade, the worse the problem. My 060 used to wheelie right off the top of every grade until I pulled the track up and smoothed and radiused the transitions, and that was with track bed. Same thing happens going downgrade with long engines, cars - they hang the couplers or worse. Good luck to you, J.R.

I was building a display for the local chamber of commerce and used these inclines. I did not use roadbed on the inclines. And just glued the track down. I must not have glued it right because it came up and I had to go back and lay road bed.

Intheory you can dispense with the roadbed. But the extra transition from going from roadbed to no roadbed might cause operational problems that can be avoided by using it straight through.

WS inclines, track bed question
Posted by Russorgan on Sunday, January 1, 2006 8:37 PM
As always, I learn something each time I visit the MR Forums.
Thanks for all of you that share information. I wonder if anyone
can advise me from their personal experience?

I am using Woodland Scenics foam incline sets on my layout.
Woodland Scenics suggests using some sort of roadbed
on top of the inclines. A portion of mine are in hidden areas -
not visible. I am dealing with a couple clearance issues.

My question is: can I successfully mount the track
directly on the foam inclines in the hidden areas and use the
roadbed material (I am using WS Track bed) only in the visible
areas?

Since I don't have a good place to cut plywood for sub-roadbed,
I am happy with these products. I have done some tests and
my trains seem to handle the grades very well. The products
are easy to use and I would recommend them to others.

Thank you for any wisdom you can provide.

Best wishes for 2006!

Russ Litchfield
