Linoleum as a back drop?
Posted by donhalshanks on Wednesday, May 28, 2003 7:31 PM
What do you think about using the back side of linoleum (or vinyl) for the back drop. I would be putting on untaped/unmud dry wall a floor backing paper, and then gluing the linoleum on that. Any suggestions ontyppe of glue? Any problems using this?

MODEL RAILROADER author Bill Darnaby uses linoleum this way for the backdrop on his HO scale Maumee Route layout. It lets him hang the backdrop in long strips and so reduces the number of seams he has to make.

His linolum isn't glued to drywall or anything else, I don't think. As I understand it it's simply hung from its top edge.

And while I'm familiar with Bill's use of linoleum, he'd be the first to admit that this isn't a new idea. Model railroaders have been using it for backdrops at least since the 1940s!

So long,

Andy

I had a friend use it and it worked and looked great. It takes a few people to put it up if you have a long piece to hang, I think he had about three or four people help him. If I remeber he either used the foam carpet tape or liquid nails and he stapled it along the top edge for extra support.
