Mine is shaped like a capital E and it is basically 9'x13' but I find that I can't tell people about it without explanation as well. I just say it's 9x13 then explain the shape. There doesn't seem to be any easier way.

I too have an L-shaped layout. I always tell people that it's "10 x 16 feet." However, I also add that it runs on a 2' wide shelf along two walls in my workshop.

If it is an O scale layout and you use an HO scale tape it would look twice the size it actually is.

Jeff i think i will just stick to calling it a 4x8 with a 36x80 backwards L extension but thanxs for the post. Tim

They are sometimes measured the way you describe (48x96 with 36x80 extension) or, overall size, meaning the size of the room that has to house it (121x80)..

It's your call..
