All of those units see general service. From pushers to mine runs from mine runs to hot shot pig/stack trains. The railroads will use their units as they see fit and make no apologies for doing so.

There is a fantastic video/DVD by Pentrex on CSX's Mountain Sub, "Up, Over, Around, and Through". Most of the power consists of C44W-ACs and SD70MACs, but some other units do appear. If you are interested in this region, Pentrex's video/DVD is a must have.

It depends on how you define the modern era. For the present day on the old C&O, you'll want big GEs (wide cabs); this applies for mainline trains and for mine shifters. Main line train will get two GEs and mine shifters around here usually get a single unit.

If you want to backdate just a little use GP40-2s or GP40s on mine shifters, generally two units with a slug cut inbetween them for xtra tractive effort. Mainline trains had a mix of 6-axle EMD or GE power; just about anything went. SD50s were used as pushers from Ronceverte, WV east - they used to put on quite a show eastbound at White Sulphur Springs.

There were also occasional appearances put in by Conrail or leased engines.

Hope this helps

AC60CW s and lets not forget the lease units from various leasers such as FURX and HLCX that are usually SD40-2 or SD40-2R s.
