Supergeared

Back in the mid 60's I remember seeing ads for Athearn Supergeared locomotives. Since I never owned one, can anyone tell me how they differed from other Athearn offerings of that era?

That was just marketing - their "supergeared" F-7's just had bigger weights to increase traction. Same gears as the others, but more pulling power.

If you want different to try a different gear ratio. Ernst makes a super gearing kit for Athearn models. I put them into a GP unit. Lowered the top speed to about 40 smph.

Couple that Ernst gearing with a quality can motor and you have a slow, steady puller with extra power!

Just be sure to make sure all your new gears are free from burs and imprefections, tohes you can repair. You will be very pleased!
Pay attention to what you read here, you may actually answer someone's question!

In responding to the original question. The Super Drive units were to denote the difference between the older HI-F drive units that were still made as a lower cost option. The HI-F drive was basicly a rubber band drive and the Super Drive was the geared drive. They later added extra weight to the F-Units to make the "Super Power" units.

Glad I could help.
