Why would anyone want to deprive you of the fun of designing your own layout?

I echo what Bill said, planning the layout is part of the fun (for many of us). If you get stuck Kalmbach sells books with stock plans for 4x8 that can be extended to 4x10. Regarding planning your own, here are some thoughts. I've been wrestling with the same size layout plan (4x10). As I see it, there are three things you can do with this space.
1. Build a loop.
The "Rock Ridge" and "Turtle Creek Central" (from MR) are nice 4x8 layouts, they are still basically a train running in a loop with some sidings. It's a good start, though, and do provide some operating possibilities.
2. Make distinct scenese
Back a year or so ago in MR there was another 4x8 layout that had a view-block down the center, which was very nice.
3. Shelf layout-style (on a table) with cassettes
My current plan it to build something more like a 30" x 10' shelf layout, using the other 18" as a loop behind the scenery. Shelf layouts tend to have a lot of industry and switching action, which is what I am shooting for. Behind the back-drop/view-block will be a cassette or cartridge (see April MR) that holds whole trains, so I can have some great variety in what happens in front of the scene.
