Since I grew up in northern Montana in the late 60's and 70's, it would have to be theGreat Northern. But interestingly enough, not the Big Sky Blue, but the orange and green that went out before I was born. I love the F units and the big steam engines together! A close second is the Burlington Northern that beautiful cascade green with the striped nose. I modeled it for a long time(circa 1975) until my wife's love for those round nose(F units) convinced me to backdate to the mid 50's. Now that I am there I am happy to be. Perhaps someday, when this verson of the layout is finished, I will purchase some BN equipment again and have two areas, but for now the orange and green (and the black steam too) rule the basement.

I'm an SP fan all the way...I model from El Paso to Houston Texas..i do have some UP stuff because of the merger so I'm going to model SP up to the time of the UP / SP merger...I model this railroad because I grew up with it...my entire family on my mother's side worked out of the East yard in San Antonio and the kerrville branch train to beckmann quarry went by twice a day which i saw from my backyard..a mile of limestone hauling open bay hoppers with a few cattle cars and box cars going to and fro kerrville each and every day ...chuck

I have to say mine is the BNSF. I live in Galesburg, IL. BNSF is represented here with a major classification yard. Plans are in the works for a layout for a modern BNSF layout and UP trackage rights.

My favorite railroad is the Southern. Good looking steam and a neat diesel paint scheme.

My favorite railroads to model are:

Santa Fe
Union Pacific
Burlington
Burlington Northern
Southern
CSX
Pennsylvania
Baltimore & Ohio and
Amtrak.

But my favorite of my favorites is Santa Fe. I can never get enough of their Warbonnet, especially on F units.[:D]

I have always been a fan of "Rocky", and those Glacier Green GN boxcars with the bold goat. I have advanced the GN era, however, to 1978......[C):-)]

The Seattle and North Coast Railroad.

Reasons:

1) Rail marine interchange.

2) It only ran for about 4 years, so no agonizing over what "era" to model

3) Limited and interesting (mostly F-units) loco roster. You can build one of every engine they had without a midnight trip to Fort Knox.

4) A physical plant with, um, character.

5) Mostly rural/seacoast scenery.

6) Did I mention rail marine interchange?

Cheers,
George

My favorites are the Ma&Pa - I like the smaller locomotives and the truss rod equipment; the PRR for it's Belpaire (spelling?)fire boxes; and the WW&F for it's small 2ft gauge equipment and waterfront tracks on pilings.
Enjoy

Frisco (SL-SF). Ship IT on the Frisco.

Why, great engines, 1522, Decapods, Red Birds (E7's and E8's), etc. Plus, family connections.

NYC 1950's. Rode NYC a great deal growing up in upstate NY down to Ohio. My grand dad was an engineer on the NYC back in the 30's-50's.

2nd fav is the PRR. I just like their color scheme. Trying to incorporate a PRR line into my layout with an interchange so I can have at least one PRR loco running.

Southern, GM&O, L&N, NW, are all roads names that I model on my freelanced southern Appalachian layout. As with many,I have chosen railroads that I have been familiar with throughout my life. (However, there are a few road names that pay the fee for track usage and others that can be seen as leased. [:-^][:D] )

The CB&Q through the heart of Wyoming, with some C&NW thrown in for good measure.

Why? Because that's where I grew up!

I do a free lanced model based on the Reading Railroad. I grew up near their lines through Pottstown, Royersford, and Phoenixville, PA. An approximation of their diesel paint scheme (lighter green) with my own road name, and I have it interchanging with the East Broad Top. (Yes, I know that was the Pennsy)

What is the multimark?

It's a black triangle inside a white semicircle. I'll try to post one now.

a bit big, but I posted my first picture!

Great Northern Railway-1947 to 1967. Love their steam power, and grew up with the Empire Builder orange and green.

The only thing about them is that they're partially owned by CN. BUT I am willing to overlook that and say that WC is my 2nd-favorite operating railroad today. CSX is still first[:P]

I like modelling museum lines - my current layout is a fictional museum loosely based on the Illinois Railway Museum (mainly as I like their collection of stock and there's plenty of photos on the web to help with choosing the right stock). I don't stick strictly to what they have though - there's an Erie Built that I justify by saying that it survived dumped in a yard somewhere and has been rebuilt internally to F59PH specifications (fiction, but I hear the NYC did rebuild some Eries with EMD power so it's not too far from reality). You can have almost anything turning up, short trains, interesting mixes of stock and power - anything goes!

What is the multimark?

The Multimark was created in 1968 when Canadian Pacific changed its name to CP Rail and switched locomotive color to red. There was a black triangle (movement) inside a white circle (global activities, CP also was an airline, a chain of hotels and a shipping line) and a red square (stability).
