What wheels for what car??

I have used Intermountain 28" Wheels on my 89' Walthers Bi-level Autoracks without any problems and I believe that the Walthers Tri-level Autorraks come from the factory with 28" Metal Wheels. The substitution of the smaller wheels should not be a problem but double check your coupler heights.

some of the larger modern freight cars use 36" wheels. Many times there is a stencil on the side of the car above the truck stating what size wheels are needed. Most of the triple deck auto racks use 33" wheels for clearance reasons.

To add to the above: The ribbed back wheels (ribbed to strengthen and to help get rid of heat from braking) were cast and prone to fracturing due to lack of uniformity and/or aging. They were superseded by non-ribbed forged wheels, which are stronger and more reliable in service.

Also most all of the older passenger cars are using the 36'' wheelsets

I guess that I forgot to say that I knew that but I have read that all freight cars use 33" wheels.

Grain Hoppers have 36 and box have 33 some with ribbed some smooth side.
