I like all trains. If someone made a Beyer-Garrett in S scale I'd have it running on my layout.
Enjoy

I voted both the real and the models. Can't hardly visit the Lancaster Pa. area without taking a ride on the Strasburg RR, then visiting the great train museum across the street. Of course that also includes stop in the Strasburg model train shop and the Choo Choo Barn.

I think theere should be another catagory. Running 1:87 duplicates, with everything exactly the same, down to the wear on the pistons. This is my dream. Running duplicated trains on my model railway.
Seriously, though, I do like to do both. When it's sunny, I take pictures on the CPR main near my house. When it's rainy, I take pictures of my model railway, and pretend I'm taking pictures of the prototype.

I have the best of all worlds: I can visit a prototype locomotive I'm modeling. I can expend rolls of film on the real thing and then try to scale down to 1/87.

The prototype is an elderly lady who doesn't move around much anymore. (OK, it's an E8 diesel, roughly 50 years old.) My model moves and hauls a passenger train. I won't ever see the elderly lady walk and talk the way she used to... but in modeling her, I have at least the basis for understanding why she was such a beauty way back then.

Ok..Explain how can one claim the title of Model Railroader if he/she doesn't visit the prototype for first hand information? So,you see both goes hand in hand..[:D]

My love of the real thing and the models is about equally balanced. While I have yet to meet a train I didn't like, I have a marked preference for the American variety. Of course, I have never been outside the US so I have yet to fall in love with any other country's trains in person (although someday I'm going to take some kind of international railfan tour!)

A friend and got into a deep conversation the other day about what our favorite trains were. As it turned out, he's a fan of real trains more than he is of the models, while I'm a model railroading fan more than I am the real ones. Then came the subject of trains from other countries. My friend said there are some that he really likes, and others he can't stand the looks of. I on the other hand have an appreciation for mostly all model trains no matter what country or time period they're from (like a dog lover is about dogs).

So how do you guys (and gals) feel about it ?.
