Chuck,
I recently returned from a 4700 mile trip through 11 western states. I'm not sure where all you plan to go, but there are quite a few steam excursion trains between you and Utah. If that's up your alley, you may want to check them out, too. To name a few, there's Cumbres and Toltec on the New Mexico/Colorado border, Durango and Silverton and the Grand Canyon railroad. There's also one between Price and Salt Lake City in Heber City, Utah.

There are other excursions in the west, too. Here are a few more (some steam, some diesel):

Napa Valley Wine Train - Napa, CA
Yosemite Sugar Mountain Railroad - Fish Camp, CA
California State Railroad Museum - Sacramento, CA
Jamestown, CA
LAWS Railroad Museum & Historical Village - Bishop, CA (just a museum, not an excursion)
Verde Canyon Railroad - Clarkdale, AZ
Royal Gorge Route Railroad - CaƱon City, CO
The Ghost Train - Ely, NV
The 1880 Train - Hill City, SD

There's even one in your homestate:
The Texas State Railroad - Rusk, TX

I know there are others that I haven't mentioned, 'cuz I can't remember all of them. If your travels take you to any of these locales, you may want to check them out. Have a great trip!

hi guys,
Haven't been here much lately because I've been driving a new RV all over the state of Texas in the past few months on weekend excursions...next week my wife and I leave to tour the western states and plan on taking lots of railfan pictures along side the rails especially around Price and Helper Utah...i'll try to post a few of them here when i get back...I really enjoy railfanning just as much as working in the model railroad world...there's nothing more fun than enjoying the sites and sounds of trains switching cars in a yard or the roar of the diesel engines pulling a fully loaded coal train over a mountain pass..what power!...anyway...see ya'll when i get back!...Chuck
