Digitrax makes recievers that have the harness already wired to replace the athearn motor covers. Any of therie recivers that have an "AT" at the end of the decoder number have these replacement parts. All they really do though is save two solder sequences and isolate the motor better. i.e. DH123AT or DH163AT models. All standard Athearns have the same guts per say, so engine specific instructions are not an issue.

Mark;
Nice site, unfortunately, much of the information on specific is out of date because the are no longer produced.
dwaneet;
There are MANY MANY different ways to install a decoder in an Athearn; here are some:
http://www.tonystrains.com/gallery/i90.htm
http://www.tonystrains.com/gallery/i60.htm
http://www.digitrax.com/mobdec.htm#dh123at
http://www.digitrax.com/mobdec.htm#dh163at
http://www.wiringfordcc.com/ath_pa1.htm
The above, plus the articles mentioned above should give you a good idea. There is no right way, but there are many acceptable ways.

Hello dwaneet,
Check the Model Train Magazine Index (a link is at the top of this page) for references to any articles about installing decoders in these locomotives.
Also, on Trains.com you'll find
Athearn HO diesel DCC decoder installation
, an illustrated article that takes you step by step through the process.

Try the Digitrax website www.digitrax.com as they have a solderless hook up for Athearn locomotives.

I'm looking for information on how to install DCC recievers in a Athearn C44-9W and a GP-40 also Athearn. Are there any articles in MR regarding this.
